Trouble Installing Addons/Mods

If you are having issues installing addons or mods for your game we have some solutions that may help you get back on your feet as quickly as possible.

Note: these guides are for after you have the game added to the Curse app.

We will start with the most common causes.

Repair Folder Permissions Tool

Folder Repair is Windows Only Option

The Curse app includes a tool to repair your game's folder permissions, allowing you to install and update addons. From the Tools menu (cogwheel in the upper right side, select the Repair Folder Permissions option. This will display a list of all the games managed by the client.

Simply click the Repair button, and wait for the confirmation message that the permissions have been repaired.

If you are still unable to update or install addons after doing this, please see the next section.

Manually Correct Folder Permissions

Folder Permissions Correction is Windows Only

First you will need to locate the location of your install.  If you do not know where it is you can always check in the games settings in the Curse app.  For example you can see Minecraft and World of Warcraft install locations.

Minecraft

Be aware that this is, by default, not in your AppData\Roaming\.minecraft folder.

World of Warcraft

Once in your install folder right click on the white space of the folder / file listing, and select Properties

Select the Security tab, and click the Edit button.

Click the Add button (not shown), type Users, and then click the OK button.

Note: The 'From this location' option should be left to the default, unless your computer is part of a Windows domain. If it is part of a Windows domain, set the location to the computer itself, not the domain.

Click the checkbox labeled Full Control and then click the OK button.

Finally, click the OK button to finish applying the new folder permissions.

Incompatible Antivirus Software

If you're still having issues with the installing addons, your antivirus software could be causing the issue. Here is a list of known antivirus software suites that are incompatible with the Curse app:

  • AVG Internet Security
  • Kapersky Antivirus
  • Comodo Internet Security
  • ESET NOD32
  • McAffee Internet Security
  • Microsoft OneCare
  • Norton Internet Security
  • ZoneAlarm

Try turning off your antivirus and running and installing your addons/mods.  If you are successful you will need to add the Curse app to your white or exception list.

Note: If you need help with how to set up your white/exception list please contact your Antivirus company for specific instruction for their software.

Advanced Folder Permissions

If you continue to addon/mods installations fail when attempting to install or update addons, it is likely due to an inconsistent permission on a subfolder. You can correct this by following the Resetting Folder Permissions knowledge base article.
